In this workshop on worldbuilding for secondary worlds, author Ken Liu will lead attendees in a reexamination of the concept of "worldbuilding" to find an alternative to the traditional approach of "objective" worldbuilding. Instead, a character-driven, "subjective" approach can unlock your creativity in crafting rich, immersive new worlds. The format of the workshop will consist of a mini-lecture followed by writing exercises.

Prior to the class, think about a potential way to craft a new secondary world that diverges from ours in some key detail. For instance: a world in which the dead don’t disappear but continue to reside with the living, a world in which time can be bought for gold, or a world in which reincarnation based on your past achievements is literally a fact of life. You don’t have to do much thinking—a vague idea in mind is enough.
